WTC 2022 – Final Thoughts

What a weekend! I’m struggling to put into words how to wrap up the excellent adventure that these guys have been on. Some of the teams have been planning this trip since 2019, and to end up winning the entire event is a fantastic achievement! I am very dissappointed that I wasn’t able to be there with them, but from what I have heard, every player had an amazing time, enjoyed time with other awesome people, and will have many fond memories of the experience.

So rather than wax lyrical about how excellent the event was (especially from someone who wasn’t there), let’s hear from the players themselves.

Aaron “Waley” Wale

Overall Highlight of the Event?
Winning the WTC with 4 of the most amazing people in the Australian community, and them following me as Captain.
Favourite Game?
Game 3 into Circle when I saved my ambushes and killing Wurmwood.
Best team shirts you saw?
Team Canada Shirts
Would you go again?
I might go again some time in the future. This was my 5th WTC and I’m taking a little break to be with my family.
What prep would you do more of next time?
We built the team in 2019 and I wouldn’t change a thing. We worked so hard and I felt we were in a great spot to achieve our goals.

David “Pottsy” Potts

Overall Highlight of the Event?
Highlight was the pre week where all the teams got together in Brussels for games, fun and team building ahead of the event. The event itself is great, but the Australian teams have always prioritised hanging out as a group before the wtc as well.
Favourite Game?
Favourite game was my first one vs USA where I played Rasheth into Crucible Guard. I had an early scenario lead but was losing on attrition, but managed to pull out an old school Skorne special where i used the Gladiator to Grand slam a jack over his caster and follow up and kill him. Close game.
Best team shirts you saw?
Australia always has the best shirts I think and they are some of the most sought after at the event, but the rest of the world is catching up and the Belgian and Canada team shirts were also great.
Would you go again?
Never say never – under the right circumstances I would go again for sure.
What prep would you do more of next time?
Post event, i think i needed more games into CG. I won both my CG games, but i was losing them both really and managed to pull out an assassination. Never my preferred way to finish a game.

Josh “Gigantor” Bates

Overall Highlight of the Event?
Getting to see old friends and making a bunch of new ones.
Favourite Game?
Against the Toms of Finland, I played the most interesting game against Thexus piloted by the sweetest most gracious opponent.
Best team shirts you saw?
Netherlands, amazing art and very striking bright orange.
Would you go again?
Always, the people are the best.
What prep would you do more of next time?
No, I think I had a correct life prep balance and that’s very important

James “Moops” Moorhouse

Overall Highlight of the Event?
Vengeance for 2015 with an amazing team
Favourite Game?
Round 4 vs Jason Watt or Round 6 vs Corey Doyle. Amazing blokes and skilled players.
Best team shirts you saw?
Canada’s were beautifully over the top. Also the Dutch windmilljack was impressive
Would you go again?
Yes absolutely
What prep would you do more of next time?
Played more of the mirror

Robin “Washed Rob” de Oliveira

Overall Highlight of the Event?
Winning a game on championship belt bottom of two.
Favourite Game?
Probably my third game against another Karchev two player from Norway. It was a masterclass in theory.
Best team shirts you saw?
My favourite team shirt was probably the Netherlands, but I also liked the Welsh shirts.
Would you go again?
Do dogs like bones?
What prep would you do more of next time?
I’d probably be there from the start, and get more than twenty-five or so games in before the event!

Ian “King” Fraser

Overall Highlight of the Event?
The people. So many different styles and thoughts. It was great to meet people I’d heard on battle reports and podcasts or seen online.
Favourite Game?
USA Apollo. Never had such a great time watching Wurmwood hand me my own ass.
Best team shirts you saw?
Canada. The feared Canada moose and goose 😅
Would you go again?
Absolutely
What prep would you do more of next time?
Now that I’ve seen how the WTC works, the tables, the matchups – I’d focus more on list building. Make sure I show up with a few more curveballs 😉

Jack “The Saviour” Ding

Overall Highlight of the Event?
Winning
Favourite Game?
Round 4 v USA voyager
Best team shirts you saw?
Our own ones
Would you go again?
In the right circumstances yes
What prep would you do more of next time?
Learning how to play my faction more in depth during the lead up

Dan “Nads” Tacken

Overall Highlight of the Event?
Watching the Aussies win. With the amount of work put in by themselves but also the wider team to play matchups and theory craft, it felt like a full Australian win and not just the Frill Necked Lizards.
Favourite Game?
The game against Wales. I had games into Kaelyssa as a green, but got taken almost to my limit. It was a good example of using Madrak to steal the time and scenario tempo even if you are losing on attrition
Best team shirts you saw?
Netherlands for sure
Would you go again?
For sure! Trying to work out how I can wrangle it for next year or the year after
What prep would you do more of next time?
Play more games honestly. I didn’t use Kolgrimma because I didn’t need to, but I’m not sure I would have won the games I would have had to play her in.

Aleks “Touchdown” Glavas

Overall Highlight of the Event?
Spending time with all the other countries’ teams and meeting new people.
Favourite Game?
USA Apollo. Wurmwood was assassinated, but I got to pull put some cool movies and my opponent was great.
Best team shirts you saw?
Canada. I liked them so much, I brought one back!
Would you go again?
1000%
What prep would you do more of next time?
I would like to test some more list variations!

Chris “Active Player” Davies

Overall Highlight of the Event?
3Peating with some of the greatest teammates one could ask for
Favourite Game?
Round 6 vs Matt Mcwatters
Best team shirts you saw?
Canada/Belgium
Would you go again?
Oh yes, though maybe at this rate I should go over there to comment on stream 🤣
What prep would you do more of next time?
Was pretty good this time, but maybe ticked a few more off of my hit-list

Sam “Deathclock” Evans

Overall Highlight of the Event?
Watching the Lizards take that trophy and the tears of joy in Waley’s eyes. We could all feel how much that meant to him, and through him, us as well.
Favourite Game?
Round 1 going to the wire vs Jason (USA). Controlling the game on CPs then having the judge watch the final few turns as the clock was so tight. The heart was racing!
Best team shirts you saw?
Looking at the ones I have, gotta agree with Pottsy on the Aussie shirts. Close second was Netherlands which I managed to snake one.
Would you go again?
For sure! Despite my personal results, I had an absolute blast and thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. It will be with me for life!
What prep would you do more of next time?
The prep was intense, but made me a much better player overall. I think next time I’d concentrate on my lists more. In hindsight, I feel I should have taken Mekanolylth over Kryssa, so taking lists that play to your strengths as a player is as important, as the prep you put in with them.

Dimitri “Dimi” Sarbanis

Overall Highlight of the Event?
Our captain forfeting the final round due to illness and the team still winning that round
Favourite Game?
Game 2 against Toms of Finland awesome openent.
Best team shirts you saw?
Canada
Would you go again?
Yeah!
What prep would you do more of next time?
I feel like I was as prepared for this WTC as any of the others I have attended or will ever attend in the future.

Brian “Actual Canabal” Woods

Overall Highlight of the Event?
The people! I had a lot of amazing opponents and met some old friends and made a lot of new ones.
Favourite Game?
Karchev and Deathjack game into USA Artemis. There were some crazy dice and a Marauder two shot Wraithe Engine with its initials.
Best team shirts you saw?
France
Would you go again?
Most definitely!
What prep would you do more of next time?
Moar games

Peter “Tyrant Crumpet” Bates

Overall Highlight of the Event?
Getting the win with some exceptional team mates
Favourite Game?
Favourite game would be into Joonas Heinonen of Finland in Round 3. Good old attrition slog, Heretic vs Goreshade4. Game 6 vs Mark was also an excellent game with a very good opponent
Best team shirts you saw?
Probly team Belgium’s comic book speech- bubble shirt, so disappointed not to get a swap of 1 of these
Would you go again?
Would love to go again, I’d go every year if I could
What prep would you do more of next time?
I think we nailed the prep to be honest

Jeff Galea

Overall Highlight of the Event?
Watching Australia win their 3rd WTC title.
Favourite Game?
The game versus Germany, I lost on army points destroyed but the scenario score was 15:15 after turn 7.
Best team shirts you saw?
Australian Shirts
Would you go again?
Unlikely as I have had a good run and might give others the chance to play.
What prep would you do more of next time?
As usual, always more games.

And so ends the Australian campaign to take out the 2022 Warmachine and Hordes WTC. Winning the entire event can definitively be classed as a success, and fitting send off for MkIII. The fact that Australia also won the first WTC in MkIII (back in 2016) means that we can bookend this chapter of Warmachine and Hordes, with an Australian victory at each end. And now we can look towards the future, and what Privateer Press have in store for all of us. Will this Australian dominance of the world stage continue, or will another country rise up to take us on?

Until next time,

Henry
